The Algarve's Postcard Beach

Ochre limestone arches and sea stacks rising from turquoise water at Praia da Marinha
Ochre limestone arches and sea stacks rising from turquoise water at Praia da Marinha

The first glimpse of Praia da Marinha comes from the clifftop, before you've taken a single step down. Ochre limestone cliffs drop away below you, sculpted by millennia of Atlantic weather into arches, sea stacks, and the double-arch "M" formation that appears on postcards across Portugal. The water below shifts between deep green and turquoise depending on the light, and on still mornings you can see the sandy bottom from the cliff edge.

The descent is 200-odd steps cut into the rock face, steep enough that your legs will know about it on the way back up. At the bottom, a compact crescent of golden sand (maybe 100 metres) sits between the cliff walls. The eastern end connects to the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail heading towards Benagil Cave, and the snorkelling around the base of the rock formations is some of the clearest on this coast.

Why visit Praia da Marinha

  • The Algarve's most recognisable coastline: the limestone arches and ochre cliffs appear on postcards, guidebook covers, and tourism campaigns across Portugal
  • Iconic "M" rock formation: the double arch rising from turquoise water is the Algarve's most photographed natural landmark
  • Exceptional snorkelling: visibility reaches 15 metres on calm days, with sea anemones, wrasse, and octopus around the rock formations
  • Starting point for the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail: one of Europe's finest coastal walks begins here
  • Hidden beach beyond the rocks: at low tide, walk past the fallen boulders to find a secluded stretch with fewer crowds
  • Heart-shaped rock formation: from the right angle on the cliffs, the rocks align to create a natural heart shape

What to expect

The beach itself is relatively small, about 100 metres of golden sand at the base of the cliffs. This means it can feel crowded during peak summer months, especially between 11am and 4pm. The limited space is part of what makes timing so important here.

Access is via a steep staircase carved into the cliff, around 200 steps that will test your legs on the way back up. Worth it, but bear this in mind if you have mobility concerns.

Best time to visit

For swimming and relaxation: Arrive before 9am in summer to claim your spot on the sand. The early light turns the cliffs warm amber, and you'll have a couple of hours before the crowds arrive.

For photography: The golden hour before sunset turns the cliffs deep amber and throws long shadows across the rock formations. The beach faces south, so it catches light throughout the day, but late afternoon provides the warmest tones.

Seasonal tips: May, June, and September offer the best balance of warm weather and manageable crowds. July and August are extremely busy; if visiting then, come at sunrise or after 5pm.

Activities

Snorkelling

Bring a mask and fins; there are no rentals on the beach. The water at Marinha is clear enough to see the sandy bottom from chest depth, and around the base of the rock formations you'll find sea anemones, small wrasse, and the occasional octopus in the crevices. Visibility reaches 15 metres on calm days, with the best conditions in the morning before the wind picks up.

Coastal walking

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) starts — or ends — at Marinha. The 5.7km clifftop path runs east to Praia de Vale Centeanes, passing sinkholes, hidden coves, and a viewpoint directly above Benagil Cave. Allow 2–3 hours one way, and arrange transport at the far end unless you want to walk both directions.

Kayaking & SUP

Guided kayak tours from Benagil pass along Marinha's coastline, and from the water the scale of the cliffs is something else entirely. The arches tower above you, and you can paddle into small grottoes invisible from the sand. Several operators in Benagil run morning tours; book ahead in summer.

Practical information

There's a small seasonal beach bar near the car park offering refreshments and simple snacks. The beach itself has no facilities, so bring everything you need including water, sunscreen, and a beach umbrella for shade.

The car park (€2/hour, €10/day) fills up quickly in summer. By 10am on peak days you may struggle to find a space. There's no public transport to the beach; driving or taxi are the only options.

Insider tips

  • The iconic double arch (the "M") is best photographed from the eastern end of the beach
  • At low tide, you can walk along the rocks to explore small coves to the east
  • The cliff-top viewpoint (before descending the stairs) offers the classic postcard view
  • Bring reef shoes; the rocks can be sharp and there are sea urchins in places
  • Arrive before 9am in summer to avoid crowds and catch the best morning light
  • The west cliff exit avoids the congested main stairs and offers bonus views

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Praia da Marinha?

The beach can only be reached by car or taxi. Follow the N125 and exit at the International School at Lagoa, then follow signs to Marinha. There's a clifftop car park (€2/hour), though it fills quickly in summer, so arrive before 10am for the best chance of a space.

Is it suitable for families with children?

The calm water and soft sand are fine for children who can manage the stairs. The steep staircase (200+ steps) makes it impractical with pushchairs or toddlers. The rocky areas require supervision as surfaces can be slippery.

Is the water warm for swimming?

Summer water temperatures range from 17-22°C. The sheltered cliff position keeps the water relatively calm. Many visitors find it refreshing rather than cold, especially in July and August.

How many steps are there to the beach?

Around 200 steps down a steep staircase carved into the cliff. The descent is manageable for most visitors, but the return climb is strenuous. Take your time and bring water.

Can I snorkel here?

It's one of the best snorkelling spots in the Algarve. The water is clear enough to spot octopus and wrasse around the rock formations, with visibility reaching 15 metres on calm days. Bring your own equipment; there are no rentals on the beach.

Is the beach crowded during summer?

The beach can feel busy between 11am and 4pm in peak summer. It's less crowded than many Algarve beaches since it's only accessible by car. Arriving early or late afternoon ensures more space.

What is the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail?

The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos is a 5.7km clifftop walking trail from Marinha to Praia de Vale Centeanes. It passes sinkholes, hidden coves, and a viewpoint directly above Benagil Cave. Allow 2–3 hours one way.

Is there shade on the beach?

Very little natural shade. The cliffs provide some shadow early morning and late afternoon, but you'll need to bring your own umbrella for midday sun protection.

What makes the heart-shaped rock?

From a specific viewpoint on the western cliffs, the M rock and adjacent formations align to create a natural heart shape. It's a favourite photography spot, and the shape is clearest during golden hour before sunset.

Are there restaurants nearby?

One seasonal restaurant operates at the base of the stairs. For better options, drive to Benagil (10 minutes) where O Pescador and Brisa do Mar serve excellent fresh fish.
