What's the weather like in the Algarve in May?

The evenings give it away. In April you reach for a layer at sunset; in May you don't. You're still on the restaurant terrace at 9pm, warm enough in short sleeves, watching the last light fade over the Atlantic. The days have stretched into proper summer length, and the pace has shifted with them: later dinners, longer beach days, no rush.

Rain has stopped. The wildflowers are fading on the clifftops but the landscape is still green, which won't last much longer. Beaches that will be elbow-to-elbow in August have space, restaurants that will need reservations in July still take walk-ins, and the accommodation that costs €200 in high season is going for €110. This is the window before the summer machine starts.

Temperature

The consistency is what separates May from April. You stop checking the forecast because you already know: warm mornings, hot afternoons, mild evenings. Along the coast, the mid-twenties feel comfortable thanks to the Atlantic breeze. Inland around Silves and Monchique the heat is more noticeable, pushing towards 28°C on the warmest days without that coastal relief.

The west coast around Sagres and Aljezur runs 2–3°C cooler, and you feel the difference when the breeze picks up. Evenings are the change that matters most: warm enough for shorts and a T-shirt until well after dark. No more reaching for the jacket at 7pm.

Sunshine and rainfall

The days run from before 7am to past 8pm, and the light keeps going even after sunset. You can fit in a morning beach session, a long lunch, and an afternoon hike without feeling pressed for time. The spring UV is deceptive at 8, catching visitors who assume it's not quite summer yet. Burn times are short, especially on boat trips with no shade and at beach level where the water reflects it back.

Rain is a non-issue. You might see a brief shower once across the entire month, if that. This is the first month where you can genuinely leave the waterproof at home and not think twice about it.

Sea temperature and swimming

You can stay in for a proper swim now, at least at the sheltered south coast beaches. The initial chill fades after a minute rather than driving you back to the towel, and on a warm afternoon at Praia da Luz or Praia da Ilha de Tavira the water feels genuinely refreshing rather than punishing. A rash guard helps for longer swims.

The west coast remains colder and rougher. Surfers in wetsuits have good conditions around Arrifana and Amado, but for casual swimming the sheltered south coast is the clear choice. Snorkelling comes into its own this month, with calmer seas and improving visibility at the coves between Lagos and Carvoeiro. Dolphin watching trips run daily from Lagos and Albufeira as the pods follow the sardine shoals inshore.

Wind and conditions

May shares April's calm. The summer Nortada is still weeks away, and the settled high-pressure systems bring still, warm days. Light onshore breezes are common in the afternoons but rarely strong enough to bother anyone beyond flipping a few book pages on the beach.

If you're planning golf, cliff walks, or outdoor dining, this is about as good as the conditions get all year. The west coast sees more breeze than the south, but even Sagres and Praia do Amado are manageable on most days.

What to pack for May in the Algarve

  • Cotton shorts, T-shirts, and something light for evening
  • Swimwear and a rash guard for longer swims in the still-cool sea
  • SPF 30–50 sunscreen and a hat; the UV is higher than you'd expect
  • Comfortable sandals and walking shoes for cliff paths and cobbled old towns
  • Sunglasses with decent UV protection
  • A light cardigan for occasional cooler evenings; you won't need rain gear

Events and seasonal highlights

The wildflower season is winding down but not gone. The coastal cliffs still carry colour, and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes is still worth walking for the combination of blooms and views. It's also one of the last months with comfortable hiking temperatures before summer heat makes midday walks unpleasant.

The Algarve International Motor Rally sometimes falls in May, with stages running through the inland hills around Silves and Monchique. It's a local event with genuine atmosphere if you happen to catch it. Outdoor dining shifts into summer mode this month: terraces fill up, evening menus expand, and the fish comes off the charcoal grill rather than out of the oven. Markets in Loulé and Olhão are colourful with seasonal produce.

Why visit the Algarve in May?

May delivers summer weather at shoulder-season prices. Accommodation is significantly cheaper than June through September, flights are well-served from most European cities, and you'll walk into restaurants, golf courses, and beach bars without a booking. The combination of warm weather, long days, and uncrowded beaches is genuinely hard to find elsewhere in southern Europe at this time of year.

The tradeoffs are real: the sea is cool enough that dedicated swimmers will prefer June or later, and the Santos Populares festivals that make June special haven't started yet. Some seasonal operations like water parks and certain boat excursions are only just ramping up. If beach swimming is the centrepiece of your trip, wait another month. But for couples, hikers, golfers, and anyone who wants to explore the Ria Formosa Natural Park or the western coastline without competing for space, May is hard to argue with.

Frequently asked questions

Is May warm enough for the beach in the Algarve?

Comfortably. Air temperatures in the mid-twenties mean sunbathing is warm from mid-morning onwards. The sea is still cool, so most people swim in short bursts rather than spending hours in the water. Bring sunscreen; the UV is stronger than it feels.

Is May a good time to visit the Algarve?

It's one of the strongest months for a visit. You get reliable warm weather, uncrowded beaches, and significantly lower prices than summer. The main trade-off is cooler sea temperatures. If you're not focused on swimming, May is arguably better than the peak months.

Does it rain in the Algarve in May?

Almost never. May typically sees only a couple of brief showers across the entire month, if any. You can plan outdoor activities with near-total confidence and leave the rain gear at home.

Is the sea warm enough for swimming in May?

It's swimmable but fresh. The south coast is warmer than the west, and sheltered beaches like Praia de Dona Ana are the most comfortable spots. You'll enjoy a quick dip on a warm day, but extended swimming is better from June onwards.

Is May busy with tourists in the Algarve?

No. It's one of the quieter months with good weather. Beaches have plenty of space, restaurants take walk-ins, and accommodation is well-priced. You'll notice more visitors than in March or April, but nothing close to the summer crowds.

How does May compare to June for visiting?

May is cheaper, quieter, and has similar sunshine. June is warmer overall, the sea is more swimmable, and the Santos Populares festivals add atmosphere. If crowds and prices matter more than sea temperature, choose May. If you want warmer swimming and festive energy, June edges it.

What are the best beaches for May in the Algarve?

The sheltered south coast beaches are warmest for swimming. Praia da Falésia offers long stretches with space to spare, and the cove beaches around Lagos like Praia do Camilo are stunning without the summer crowds. For walking and scenery, the west coast beaches near Vila do Bispo are dramatic and empty.
