1Blue Flag certified beaches
85 Algarve beaches meet rigorous international standards for water quality, safety, and environmental management
The Blue Flag is awarded annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) — one of the world's most recognised eco-labels for beaches and marinas. To earn certification, a beach must meet 33 criteria covering water quality, environmental management, safety services, and beach facilities.
The Algarve consistently holds one of Europe's highest concentrations of Blue Flag beaches. For visitors, this certification means regularly tested bathing water, lifeguards during summer months, accessible toilet facilities, and clear safety signage — giving families peace of mind when choosing where to swim.
Water quality
Bathing water tested regularly throughout the season for bacteria and chemical contamination. Results must meet strict EU standards.
Safety standards
Lifeguards, first aid equipment, and emergency access during bathing season. Clear flag systems indicate swimming conditions.
Accessible facilities
Toilets, drinking water, and waste disposal. Many beaches include ramps and adapted facilities for visitors with reduced mobility.
Environmental care
Active protection of natural habitats, pollution prevention, and promotion of sustainable beach activities.
Beach Tips
Make the most of your beach days in the Algarve
Timing
Arrive early in summer (before 10am) for the best spots. Late afternoon offers beautiful light and smaller crowds.
Tides
Some beaches almost disappear at high tide. Check tide times and plan accordingly, especially for cove beaches.
Sun Safety
The Algarve sun is intense. Use high SPF sunscreen, seek shade during midday, and stay hydrated.
Parking
Popular beaches fill up fast. Some have paid parking; others require a walk. Consider arriving early or using local transport.
