At a glance
From Faro Airport
Albufeira is in the central Algarve, 46 km west of Faro Airport — under 40 minutes on the motorway.
Private transfer or taxi
A pre-booked private transfer takes about 35 minutes door-to-door, typically €40–55 for the car. As the Algarve's largest resort town, Albufeira is well served by transfer companies — availability is rarely a problem, even late at night. Taxis from the airport rank charge more — expect €60–80 with tolls.
Uber and Bolt both operate at the airport. The same trip usually costs €30–45, though summer surge pricing pushes it higher.
Car rental
Rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. Take the A22 (Via do Infante) westbound and exit at Albufeira — about 35 minutes on a clear road. The A22 is tolled; the toll for this stretch is around €4–5. Most rental companies offer an electronic toll device.
The N125 is the free alternative. Allow 50 minutes and expect slower going through the outskirts of Loulé.
By public transport from the airport
The cheapest route combines bus and train:
- Take the Próximo bus (line 16) from outside arrivals to Faro train station (~15 min, ~€2.85)
- At Faro station, take the regional train westbound to Albufeira–Ferreiras (~40 min, ~€3.80)
- From Albufeira–Ferreiras station, take a local bus or taxi to the centre (6 km, ~€6–8 by taxi)
Total cost: roughly €10–14. Total time: allow 2–2.5 hours including waits. The station-to-town transfer adds time and cost — factor it in.
Direct airport shuttle buses also run to Albufeira in summer, operated by various transfer companies. These cost €8–15 per person and drop off at central points. Check availability when you book your flight.
Check CP (Comboios de Portugal) for the current timetable.
From Lisbon
By bus
Rede Expressos runs daily services from Sete Rios bus terminal in Lisbon directly to Albufeira. The journey takes about 3 hours 15 minutes and costs €20–22. The Albufeira bus station drops you 500m from the old town — much more convenient than the train station.
From Lisbon Airport, take the Metro to Jardim Zoológico (blue line, ~30 min) — Sete Rios terminal is immediately outside.
By train
The most practical rail route uses Tunes junction, which sits within Albufeira municipality:
- Lisbon (Oriente or Entrecampos) → Tunes: Intercidades (~2h 45 min, from €22) or Alfa Pendular via Tunes (~2h 30 min, from €25 — check that your service stops at Tunes)
- Tunes → Albufeira–Ferreiras: Regional train (~10 min, ~€1.60)
- Albufeira–Ferreiras → centre: Local bus or taxi (6 km)
The Tunes junction is where long-distance trains from the north connect to the Algarve regional line. Not all Alfa Pendular services stop here — check when booking. Total journey: 3–4 hours including the connection and last-mile transfer.
By car
Take the A2 south from Lisbon, then the A22 westbound. Exit at Albufeira. About 260 km, 2.5–3 hours in light traffic. Both motorways are tolled — budget roughly €18–24. The approach road into Albufeira can slow to a crawl on summer Saturday changeover days.
From other Algarve towns
By train
Albufeira–Ferreiras station sits on the main Algarve regional line. Trains run every 1–2 hours in each direction.
| From | Journey time | Approx. fare |
|---|---|---|
| Faro | 40 min | €3.80 |
| Loulé | 25 min | €2.30 |
| Portimão | 35 min | €3.40 |
| Lagos | 1h (change at Tunes) | €5.20 |
| Tavira | 1h 15 min | €6.50 |
The municipality has three stations: Tunes, Albufeira–Ferreiras, and Boliqueime. Albufeira–Ferreiras is the one you want for the town, but remember it's 6 km north of the centre — you'll need a taxi (~€8), local bus, or Uber from the station. This is the biggest surprise for first-time visitors expecting a walkable station.
By bus
Vamus Algarve connects Albufeira to Faro, Portimão, and other Algarve towns. The bus station on Rua Paul Harris is far more central than the train station — 500m from the old town. Direct routes serve most major Algarve destinations. Local routes also connect the old town to the Strip (Avenida Sá Carneiro) and outlying beaches.
By car
| From | Route | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Faro | A22 west | 35 min |
| Loulé | A22 west or N125 | 25 min |
| Portimão | A22 east or N125 | 30 min |
| Silves | N124 south | 20 min |
| Lagos | A22 east | 45 min |
Getting around Albufeira
On foot
The old town is compact but hilly — the drop from the main square down to Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman's Beach) is steep, with stairs and narrow lanes. Comfortable shoes are essential. Everything within the old town — restaurants, bars, the beach — is within a 10-minute walk.
The Strip (Avenida Sá Carneiro) is a separate area about 2.5 km east of the old town. Walking between the two takes 30–40 minutes; most people take a bus or taxi.
Local buses
Giro buses (Albufeira's urban transport) connect the old town, the Strip, and the beaches. The most useful routes for visitors link the old town to the Strip and to Praia da Oura. Single fares around €1.50–2. Services run more frequently in summer, less so in winter.
Parking
Central old town: avoid driving in — streets are steep, narrow, and mostly pedestrianised. Multi-storey car parks sit on the edge of the old town and are the best option (paid, roughly €5–8/day).
The Strip: parking along the road and in nearby lots, paid in summer.
Beaches: Praia da Falésia and other outlying beaches have car parks that fill by mid-morning in July and August. Arrive early or take the bus.
