At a glance
From Faro Airport
Castro Marim lies in the far eastern Algarve, close to the Spanish border and about 47 minutes from Faro Airport by road.
Private transfer or taxi
A pre-booked private transfer takes about 45 minutes door-to-door, typically €50–65 for the car. Taxis from the airport rank cost more on the meter — expect €80–100 with A22 tolls.
Uber and Bolt both operate in the Algarve, but availability this far east is unreliable outside summer. If you're counting on ride-hailing, have a backup plan. Both apps work at the airport pick-up area outside arrivals.
Car rental
Rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. Take the A22 (Via do Infante) eastbound and exit for Castro Marim — about 40 minutes on a clear road. The A22 is tolled; most rental companies offer an electronic toll device. The toll for this stretch is around €4.50.
The N125 is the free alternative, passing through Olhão and Tavira. Allow 1 hour 10 minutes and expect slow stretches through town centres.
By public transport from the airport
Public transport to Castro Marim is limited. The most practical route goes via Vila Real de Santo António:
- Take the Próximo bus (line 16) from outside the arrivals terminal to Faro train station (~15 min, ~€2.85)
- At Faro station, take the regional train eastbound to Vila Real de Santo António (~1 hour, ~€5)
- From VRSA, take a local Vamus bus or taxi north to Castro Marim (~10 min)
Total cost: roughly €8–10. Total time: allow 2.5–3 hours including waits. Castro Marim has its own station, but service is limited — Vila Real de Santo António station is the eastern terminus with more frequent trains and is a better connection point.
Check CP (Comboios de Portugal) for the current timetable.

Getting around Castro Marim
On foot
The castle and the old town below it are walkable, though the climb up to the fortress is steep. The town centre is small — you can cover it in 15 minutes. Beyond the centre, however, a car is essential. The Reserva Natural do Sapal (salt marsh nature reserve) sprawls across the flats east of town and has no pedestrian infrastructure.
Parking
Free parking is available at the base of the castle hill and along the main road through town. Spaces are rarely a problem outside the Medieval Fair (late August), when the town fills up and roadside parking extends well out of the centre.
Beaches
The nearest beach is Monte Gordo, about 10 minutes south by car. Praia Verde is roughly 15 minutes. There is no public transport to the beaches — a car is the only practical option.
Taxi
There is no taxi rank in Castro Marim. Call ahead or arrange a pickup through your accommodation. Uber and Bolt are effectively unavailable here.
