Island Beaches of the Ria Formosa
Faro's beaches are unlike any others in the Algarve. Stretched along barrier islands within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, they range from road-accessible to entirely uninhabited — all with calm, warm lagoon water and a sense of escape from the mainland.
Ilha de Faro is the most accessible — connected by bridge near the airport, it offers a Blue Flag beach with restaurants and facilities. For true solitude, take the ferry to Ilha Deserta (Barreta), Portugal's only uninhabited island, with 7km of quiet sand and a single eco-restaurant. Ilha do Farol and Ilha da Culatra are working fishing communities with quiet ocean-side beaches.
