At a glance
From Faro Airport
Loulé is the closest municipality to Faro Airport after Faro itself — just 18 km, about 19 minutes by car.
Private transfer or taxi
A pre-booked private transfer or taxi from the airport takes about 20 minutes, typically €25–35 for the car. Given the short distance, a taxi from the rank is reasonable here — the meter won't run up the way it does for western Algarve destinations.
If your accommodation is in Vilamoura or Quarteira on the coast rather than Loulé town, transfers cost about the same — the distance is similar. Make sure your driver knows the specific destination, as the Loulé municipality is large.
Uber and Bolt both work at the airport. Expect to pay €15–25.
Car rental
Rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. The drive to Loulé town follows the N125 east and then the EN270 north — about 19 minutes. For Vilamoura or Quarteira, head west on the N125 and turn south — 20 minutes from the airport.
A car is particularly worthwhile here: the Loulé municipality stretches from the coast up into the hills, and public transport between the town and the resort areas is limited.
By public transport from the airport
- Take the Próximo bus (line 16) from outside arrivals to Faro train station (~15 min, ~€2.85)
- At Faro station, take the regional train westbound to Loulé (~15 min, ~€1.90)
- From Loulé station, take a taxi to the town centre (4 km, ~€6–8)
Total cost: roughly €10–13. Total time: allow 1.5–2 hours including waits. The last-mile taxi from Loulé station to the town centre is unavoidable — the station is 4 km south and there is no regular bus link.
Resort shuttle buses run directly from the airport to Vilamoura and Quarteira in summer, operated by various hotel and transfer companies. If you're staying on the coast, these are often the simplest option — check with your hotel.
Check CP (Comboios de Portugal) for the current timetable.
From Lisbon
By bus
Rede Expressos runs daily services from Sete Rios bus terminal in Lisbon to Faro, where you change for a local bus to Loulé. Some services continue to Loulé directly. The journey takes about 3.5 hours to Faro, plus 30 minutes onward to Loulé. Expect to pay €20–23 total.
From Lisbon Airport, take the Metro to Jardim Zoológico (blue line, ~30 min) — Sete Rios terminal is immediately outside.
By train
- Lisbon (Oriente or Entrecampos) → Faro: Alfa Pendular (~3 hours, from €25) or Intercidades (~3.5 hours, from €22)
- Faro → Loulé: Regional train (~15 min, ~€1.90)
- Loulé station → town centre: Taxi (4 km, ~€6–8)
Total journey: 3.5–4 hours including the connection and last-mile transfer.
By car
Take the A2 south from Lisbon, then the A22 westbound. Exit at Loulé. About 270 km, 2.5 hours in light traffic. Both motorways are tolled — budget roughly €18–24. The drive is straightforward.
From other Algarve towns
By train
Loulé sits on the main Algarve regional line between Faro and the western towns.
| From | Journey time | Approx. fare |
|---|---|---|
| Faro | 15 min | €1.90 |
| Albufeira–Ferreiras | 25 min | €2.30 |
| Portimão | 50 min | €4.50 |
| Tavira | 50 min | €4.80 |
The municipality has three stations: Loulé, Almancil, and Parque das Cidades. Loulé station is the main one, 4 km south of the town centre. Almancil station is useful for the Golden Triangle area (Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo) — though it's still a taxi ride from the resorts.
By bus
Vamus Algarve connects Loulé to Faro, Albufeira, and other towns. The bus station on Rua Nossa Senhora de Fátima is in the town centre — far more convenient than the train station. Local routes serve Quarteira and Vilamoura, though frequency is limited.

| Faro | N125 or EN270 | 20 min |
| Albufeira | A22 east or N125 | 25 min |
| Portimão | A22 east | 45 min |

Getting around Loulé
On foot
Loulé town is compact and walkable: the castle, the market hall, the main churches, and the old streets all fit within a 15-minute walk. The Saturday market area and the covered municipal market (the Moorish-style building) are central. Streets are hilly in places, especially climbing to the castle.
Local buses
Vamus routes connect Loulé to Quarteira and Vilamoura, but services are infrequent — typically 4–6 departures per day. For the coast, a car or taxi is more practical.
Parking
Town centre: metered parking around the market and main square. On Saturday mornings (market day), central spaces fill early — arrive before 9am for a spot near the market, or park on the outskirts and walk 10 minutes in. Free parking is easier to find along the streets north of the castle.
Vilamoura and Quarteira: paid parking near the beaches in summer. The Vilamoura marina has a large car park (paid).
Taxi and ride-hailing
Local taxis wait near the market and at the bus station. Uber and Bolt work in the broader area but availability in Loulé town is inconsistent — more reliable in Vilamoura and Quarteira where tourist demand is higher.
