At a glance
From Faro Airport
Faro Airport is 86 km southeast of Monchique. The drive takes about 1 hour 10 minutes via the A22 motorway and the N266 mountain road.
Private transfer or taxi
A pre-booked private transfer is the most comfortable option: door-to-door in about 70 minutes, typically €70–90 for the car. Recommended if you're arriving with luggage or after dark, since the final stretch is a winding mountain road with no street lighting. Taxis from the airport rank will be more expensive and may be reluctant to make the trip.
Uber and Bolt operate in the Algarve but availability drops sharply once you leave the coast. You may get a ride to Monchique from the airport, but finding one for the return is unreliable.
Car rental
Rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. Take the A22 (Via do Infante) westbound and exit toward Portimão, then follow the N266 north into the serra — about 30 minutes of climbing, winding road from the coast. The A22 is tolled; ask at the desk for an electronic toll device. Total tolls run around €5–6 for this stretch.
In winter, the N266 can be foggy and the road surface wet. Drive carefully, especially on the final hairpin bends approaching town.
By public transport from the airport
There is no practical public transport connection from Faro Airport to Monchique. The best route involves three legs:
- Próximo bus (line 16) from the airport to Faro bus/train station (~15 min, ~€2.85)
- Regional train from Faro to Portimão (~1h 15 min, ~€6.50)
- Vamus bus from Portimão to Monchique (~30 min, ~€3.50)
Total cost: roughly €12–13. Total time: allow 3–4 hours including waits. The Portimão–Monchique bus runs only a few times per day — check the Vamus timetable before committing to this route. Missing the connection means a long wait.
From Lisbon
By bus
There is no direct bus from Lisbon to Monchique. The most practical route is Rede Expressos from Sete Rios to Portimão (about 4 hours, €20–22), then a Vamus bus or taxi up to Monchique. Allow at least 5 hours for the full journey.
By train
Take the Alfa Pendular or Intercidades from Lisbon to Faro (~3–3.5 hours), then the regional train to Portimão (~1h 15 min), then a bus or taxi to Monchique. The connections rarely align well — allow a full day.
By car
Take the A2 south from Lisbon, then the A22 westbound to the Portimão exit. Follow the N266 north into the mountains. About 290 km, 3 hours in light traffic. Both motorways are tolled — budget roughly €22–27 total.
From other Algarve towns
By bus
Vamus Algarve runs a limited service between Portimão and Monchique (roughly 30 minutes). Departures are infrequent — only a handful per day on weekdays, fewer at weekends. There is no direct bus from other Algarve towns; everything routes through Portimão.

Getting around Monchique
On foot
Monchique town is small and walkable, though steep in places — the streets climb steeply from the main square. The centre, market, and churches are all within a 10-minute walk. Comfortable shoes with grip are advisable on the cobbled slopes.
Caldas de Monchique — the thermal spa village — is 6 km south of town and has no pavement connection. You need a car or taxi.
Parking
Free parking is available on the roads around the main square and near the health centre. Spaces fill up on market days (second Friday of the month) and during the Medronho Festival in December. There is no paid parking in Monchique.
Beyond the town
A car is essential for anything beyond the town centre. Foia (the highest point in the Algarve at 902m) is 8 km west along a mountain road. The countryside, walking trails, and rural restaurants are spread across the serra with no bus service. Taxi availability is very limited — arrange by phone rather than expecting a rank.
