From Faro Airport

Private transfer or taxi

A pre-booked private transfer takes about 50 minutes, typically €60–80 for the car. Taxis from the airport rank cost more — expect €85–110 with meter and tolls. If your accommodation is in Praia da Rocha rather than Portimão centre, make sure your driver knows — it's an extra 10 minutes beyond the town.

Uber and Bolt both operate at the airport. The same trip usually costs €45–65, though summer surge pricing applies.

Getting around Portimão

On foot

The town centre is flat and walkable: the riverfront promenade, the old town streets, and the market are all within a 15-minute loop. However, Praia da Rocha — the main beach area with most of the resort hotels — is 3 km south of the centre. Walking there takes 35–40 minutes, mostly downhill going (uphill returning).

Local buses

Vai e Vem (Portimão's urban bus network) connects the centre to Praia da Rocha and other neighbourhoods. The route between the centre and Praia da Rocha runs frequently in summer (every 15–20 min), less so in winter. Single fares around €1.50.

Parking

Centre: street parking is metered in the main commercial area. The riverside has a large car park (paid in summer, often free in winter).

Praia da Rocha: parking along the clifftop road and in lots behind the beach. In July and August, spaces fill by mid-morning — arrive early or take the bus from the centre. Multi-storey parking is available near the main strip.
