Where Algarve golf began
Portimão is where Algarve golf started. Penina Championship, opened in 1966, was the region's first championship layout and has hosted multiple Portuguese Opens. Its tree-lined fairways and strategic water hazards set a template that courses across the region followed.
Inland, two contrasting courses share the Morgado estate in the foothills below Monchique. Morgado Golf is the longer, hillier championship layout — rolling terrain with genuine elevation change and views toward the Serra. Álamos Golf is tighter and more technical, with narrow fairways that reward precision over power, at a lower green fee. Closer to the coast, Alto Golf occupies an elevated site above Alvor — Cotton's final Algarve design, with wind-exposed holes and Atlantic views that no other course in the municipality can match.
