At a glance
From Faro Airport
Faro Airport is just 21 km south of São Brás de Alportel — one of the closest municipalities to the airport despite being inland. The drive takes about 24 minutes via the N2.
Private transfer or taxi
A pre-booked private transfer takes about 25 minutes and typically costs €25–35 for the car — one of the cheapest airport transfers in the Algarve. Taxis from the airport rank will cost roughly the same on the meter. The short distance makes this straightforward at any time of day.
Uber and Bolt both operate at Faro Airport. The trip to São Brás de Alportel costs around €15–20 and takes about 25 minutes. Availability is generally good at the airport, though finding a return ride from São Brás itself is less reliable.
Car rental
Rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. Take the N2 north from Faro — the road climbs through gentle hills and arrives in São Brás de Alportel in about 20 minutes. No motorway needed, no tolls. If you want to explore the countryside or visit the coast during your stay, a car is the best option.
By public transport from the airport
A workable route in two legs:
- Próximo bus (line 16) from the airport to Faro bus station (~15 min, ~€2.85)
- Vamus bus from Faro to São Brás de Alportel (~30 min, ~€3)
Total cost: roughly €6–7. Total time: allow 1–1.5 hours including the wait. The Vamus bus from Faro to São Brás runs regularly on weekdays (roughly every 1–2 hours). Weekend service is reduced — check the timetable. This is a genuinely usable public transport connection, unlike most inland Algarve destinations.
From Lisbon
By bus
There is no direct bus from Lisbon to São Brás de Alportel. Take Rede Expressos from Sete Rios to Faro (~3.5–4 hours, €20–22), then the Vamus bus to São Brás (~30 min). Total journey: about 4.5–5 hours.
By train
Take the Alfa Pendular or Intercidades from Lisbon to Faro (~3–3.5 hours, from €22). From Faro, take the Vamus bus to São Brás (~30 min). The connection is straightforward — both the train station and bus station in Faro are close together. Total journey: 4–4.5 hours with a reasonable wait.
By car
Take the A2 south from Lisbon, then exit toward Faro/São Brás on the N2. About 280 km, 2 hours 45 minutes. Motorway tolls total roughly €18–22. You can skip the A22 entirely — the N2 exit from the A2 takes you directly into São Brás.
From other Algarve towns
By bus
Vamus Algarve connects Faro to São Brás de Alportel with regular weekday service (~30 min). From other Algarve towns, change in Faro. Some services also connect São Brás to Loulé and Tavira, but these are infrequent — check the Vamus timetable.

Getting around São Brás de Alportel
On foot
The town centre is compact and flat enough to walk comfortably. The main square (Largo de São Sebastião), the market hall, the Costume Museum, and the parish church are all within 10 minutes of each other. The town is the municipality for practical purposes — almost everything you'd visit is here.
Parking
Free parking is available throughout town, including near the main square and the municipal market. You will not have difficulty finding a space.
Beyond the town
The municipality is small and mostly rural. A car is needed for the surrounding countryside — the cork oak landscape, the Fonte Férrea spring, and the roads north into the serra. There is no bus service to outlying areas. Taxi availability is limited; ask your accommodation to arrange one if needed.
