At a glance
From Faro Airport
Silves sits inland in the central Algarve, about an hour's drive from Faro Airport.
Private transfer or taxi
A pre-booked private transfer takes about 50 minutes door-to-door, typically €50–65 for the car. Taxis from the airport rank cost more on the meter — expect €80–100 with A22 tolls on top.
Uber and Bolt both operate in the Algarve. The trip usually costs €40–55, though availability drops for inland destinations outside peak hours. Both apps work at the airport pick-up area outside arrivals.
Car rental
Rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. Take the A22 (Via do Infante) westbound and exit at junction 7 for Silves — about 45 minutes on a clear road. The A22 is tolled; most rental companies offer an electronic toll device. The toll for this stretch is around €4.
The N125 is the free alternative, passing through Loulé and Lagoa before turning north to Silves. Allow over an hour and expect traffic, especially in summer.
By public transport from the airport
The cheapest route combines bus and train:
- Take the Próximo bus (line 16) from outside the arrivals terminal to Faro train station (~15 min, ~€2.85)
- At Faro station, take the regional train westbound to Silves (~50 min, ~€5)
Total cost: roughly €7–8. Total time: allow 2–2.5 hours including the wait between connections. Trains run every 1–2 hours. Note that Silves station is 2 km south of town — the walk down to the station is easy but the return uphill is a proper climb.
Check CP (Comboios de Portugal) for the current timetable.
From Lisbon
By bus
Rede Expressos runs daily services from the Sete Rios bus terminal in Lisbon to Portimão (~3.5 hours, €20–22). From Portimão, a local bus or taxi covers the 16 km to Silves in about 20 minutes. There is no direct Lisbon–Silves service.
From Lisbon Airport, take the Metro to Jardim Zoológico (blue line, ~30 min) — Sete Rios terminal is immediately outside.
By train
There is no direct train from Lisbon to Silves. The route requires a change:
- Lisbon (Oriente or Entrecampos) → Tunes: Intercidades (~3 hours, from €22)
- Tunes → Silves: Regional train (~15 min, ~€2)
Alternatively, travel to Faro by Alfa Pendular (~3 hours, from €25) and catch the regional line westbound. Total journey: 4–5 hours including connections.
By car
Take the A2 south from Lisbon, then the A22 westbound. Exit at junction 7 for Silves. About 280 km, 2 hours 45 minutes in light traffic. Both motorways are tolled — budget roughly €20–25 total.
From other Algarve towns
By train
Silves station sits on the Lagos–Faro regional line. Trains run every 1–2 hours in each direction.
| From | Journey time | Approx. fare |
|---|---|---|
| Faro | 50 min | €5.00 |
| Albufeira–Ferreiras | 25 min | €2.50 |
| Lagos | 45 min | €4.50 |
| Portimão | 15 min | €2.00 |
| Tunes | 15 min | €2.00 |
The municipality has several stations — Algoz, Alcantarilha, Poço Barreto, and Messines-Alte — but none of these serve the town itself. The station called Silves (technically just inside Lagoa municipality) is the one you want. It's 2 km south of the old town: a 20-minute walk downhill in, but a stiff climb back up.
By bus
Vamus Algarve runs limited services connecting Silves to Portimão and Albufeira. Frequency is low — a handful of departures per day on weekdays, fewer at weekends. For most visitors, the train is more practical.
By car
| From | Route | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Portimão | N124-1 north | 20 min |
| Lagoa | N124-1 via Estômbar | 15 min |
| Albufeira | A22 west, exit J7 | 25 min |
| Faro | A22 west, exit J7 | 45 min |
| Lagos | A22 east or N125 | 40 min |
| Monchique | N266 south | 30 min |
Boat from Portimão
Between roughly April and October, excursion boats run up the Arade River from Portimão to a jetty below Silves castle. The trip takes about an hour and passes salt pans and wooded banks. It's a scenic way to arrive, though most services are guided tours rather than scheduled transport. Book through operators in Portimão marina.
Getting around Silves
On foot
The historic centre is compact but steep. The castle sits at the top of the hill, the cathedral halfway down, and the river at the bottom. Allow 10–15 minutes to walk from the riverside to the castle — more in summer heat. Cobbled streets are uneven; sturdy shoes with good grip help. Most restaurants, the market, and the archaeological museum are within easy walking distance of each other.
Parking
Free parking is available along the riverside near the Arade bridge and in a large unpaved area below the town walls. Spaces fill by mid-morning in summer. There is limited paid parking closer to the cathedral. The town is small enough that parking once and walking is the best approach.
Local buses
There is no meaningful local bus network within Silves town. Regional Vamus routes pass through but are designed for inter-town travel, not getting around the centre.
Taxi
A small taxi rank operates near the market. For the station–town connection, a taxi costs about €5–7 and saves the uphill walk. Uber and Bolt are unreliable this far inland.
