Island Beaches with Character
Tavira's beaches occupy the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa, each with its own distinct personality. The sheltered position of the eastern Algarve means the sea here is noticeably warmer and calmer than the exposed Atlantic beaches further west — a genuine advantage for swimming, especially with children.
Praia da Ilha de Tavira is reached by ferry from the town centre; Praia do Barril by a miniature train that crosses the salt marshes to its famous anchor cemetery. Praia da Terra Estreita offers quieter sands between the two, and Praia de Cabanas has a more local, laid-back character.
