At a glance
From Faro Airport
Faro Airport is 109 km east of Vila do Bispo. Most visitors head straight to Sagres, 10 minutes further south, rather than Vila do Bispo town itself.
Private transfer or taxi
A pre-booked private transfer to Sagres takes about 90 minutes and typically costs €90–120 for the car. A good option if you're arriving late — the N125 and N268 have no lighting for the final stretch. Taxis from the airport rank will charge significantly more.
Uber and Bolt operate in the Algarve but availability this far west is poor. A ride from the airport is possible; getting one from Sagres for the return is unlikely.
Car rental
Rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. Take the A22 westbound to Lagos, then the N125 and N268 south through Vila do Bispo to Sagres — about 20 minutes from Lagos. The A22 is tolled; budget roughly €7–8. A car is the best way to explore this municipality, where beaches and villages are spread along 30 km of coastline.
By public transport from the airport
The most practical route combines bus and train:
- Próximo bus (line 16) from the airport to Faro station (~15 min, ~€2.85)
- Regional train from Faro to Lagos (~2 hours, change at Tunes, ~€8)
- Vamus bus (line 47) from Lagos to Sagres (~30 min, ~€3.50)
Total cost: roughly €14. Total time: allow 4–5 hours including waits. The Lagos–Sagres bus runs roughly hourly in summer, less often in winter. This is one of the better public transport connections in the western Algarve — the bus to Sagres is reasonably reliable.
From Lisbon
By bus
Take Rede Expressos from Sete Rios to Lagos (~4 hours, €20–22), then the Vamus line 47 to Sagres (~30 min). Some Rede Expressos services run to Lagos via the Algarve coast; check which stop is closest to the bus station for the onward connection.
By train
Take the Alfa Pendular or Intercidades from Lisbon to Faro (~3–3.5 hours), change for the regional train to Lagos (~2 hours, change at Tunes), then the bus to Sagres. Total journey: 6–7 hours. The bus from Lisbon to Lagos is simpler.
By car
Take the A2 south from Lisbon, then the A22 to Lagos, then the N268 to Sagres. About 310 km, 3.5 hours. Motorway tolls total roughly €22–27.
From other Algarve towns
By bus
Vamus Algarve line 47 connects Lagos to Sagres (roughly hourly in summer, reduced in winter, ~30 min). The bus stops in Vila do Bispo town on the way. From other Algarve towns, change in Lagos.

Getting around Vila do Bispo
On foot
Sagres is compact and walkable. The fortress, the harbour, Praia da Mareta, and the main strip of restaurants are all within 15 minutes on foot. The terrain is flat.
Vila do Bispo town is a small crossroads settlement — there isn't much to walk to. Most visitors pass through rather than stop.
Parking
Free parking is available throughout Sagres and Vila do Bispo. In Sagres, the fortress car park fills on summer afternoons — arrive before noon. Beach car parks at Mareta and Tonel are free and usually have space except in peak August.
Beyond the towns
Cape St Vincent is 6 km west of Sagres with no bus — drive or cycle. The west coast beaches — Castelejo, Cordoama, Amado — are 10–20 minutes north by car, with no public transport. The villages of Salema and Burgau, tucked into the south coast, are also car-access only.
Taxis
A small taxi rank operates in Sagres near the main roundabout. For trips to Cape St Vincent or the west coast beaches, agree the fare in advance. Uber and Bolt are effectively unavailable here.
