Apartments and aparthotels sit in a sweet spot between hotel convenience and villa independence. You get a kitchen, a living area, and usually more floor space than a hotel room — but without the isolation of a standalone property.

Aparthotels

Aparthotels are hotel-managed buildings where every unit has a kitchen and living space, plus hotel services: reception, daily housekeeping, pool, and sometimes a restaurant. The Algarve adapted early to this format — many properties that look like hotels from the outside are actually aparthotels with kitchenettes in every unit. Albufeira has the highest concentration, with strong options also in Portimão and Lagoa. Pricing runs €70–150/night for a family unit — significantly less than two hotel rooms.

City apartments

Town-centre apartments in Faro, Lagos, and Tavira offer walkable access to restaurants, markets, and local life. Quality has improved significantly in recent years, driven by renovation of older buildings. The best options are converted townhouses with rooftop terraces — particularly in Tavira's historic centre and Olhão's waterfront.

Beach apartments

Coastal complexes near sand are the bread and butter of the Algarve's apartment market. Albufeira (Areias de São João, Montechoro), Portimão (Praia da Rocha), and Lagoa (Carvoeiro) have the densest supply. Many sit within walking distance of the beach, which is a genuine advantage over villas that require a car. Competition keeps prices honest.

Long-stay & digital nomad

Apartments are popular with remote workers, but Wi-Fi in older complexes can be unreliable. Lagos and Faro have the most developed digital nomad scenes, with coworking spaces and cafés with strong internet. Monthly rates with 15–30% discounts are common, especially outside peak season. Tavira is a quieter alternative with growing infrastructure.

Budget studios

For solo travellers or couples on a tight budget, studio apartments offer the cheapest self-catering option — often €30–50/night in shoulder season. Quality varies enormously; reviews are your best guide. Albufeira and Portimão have the most competition and therefore the best value at the budget end.

Booking tips

Aparthotels often have the best direct-booking deals. Many operate their own websites with lower rates than Booking.com or Expedia, plus extras like free parking or breakfast.

Weekly and monthly discounts are common. If staying more than a week, ask about long-stay rates — discounts of 15–30% are typical.

Kitchen quality varies enormously. Some "kitchenettes" are a microwave and a minibar fridge. If self-catering is central to your plan, verify equipment before booking.

Check-in logistics for private apartments. Unlike hotels, private apartments may have limited check-in windows or require key collection from a separate location. Confirm arrangements before arrival.
