At a glance
From Faro Airport
Lagoa sits in the central Algarve, about 47 minutes west of Faro Airport by motorway. Most visitors head to Carvoeiro, the main coastal resort, which has no train station of its own.
Private transfer or taxi
A pre-booked private transfer to Carvoeiro takes about 50 minutes door-to-door, typically €50–65 for the car. Specify Carvoeiro (not Lagoa town) when booking if that's your destination — the two are 5 km apart. Taxis from the airport rank cost more on the meter — expect €80–100 with A22 tolls.
Uber and Bolt both operate in the Algarve. The trip usually costs €40–55. Both apps work at the airport pick-up area outside arrivals.
Car rental
Rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. Take the A22 (Via do Infante) westbound and exit at junction 6 or 7 — about 40 minutes on a clear road. For Carvoeiro, follow signs south from the motorway exit. The A22 is tolled; most rental companies offer an electronic toll device. The toll for this stretch is around €4.
The N125 is the free alternative, passing through Loulé and Albufeira. Allow over an hour and expect traffic, especially in summer.
By public transport from the airport
Getting to Lagoa municipality by public transport is workable but slow, especially if Carvoeiro is your final stop:
- Take the Próximo bus (line 16) from outside the arrivals terminal to Faro train station (~15 min, ~€2.85)
- At Faro station, take the regional train westbound to Estômbar-Lagoa (~45 min, ~€5)
- From Estômbar-Lagoa station, take a taxi to Carvoeiro (~10 min, ~€10) or Lagoa town (~5 min, ~€6)
Total cost: roughly €8–18 depending on the final leg. Total time: allow 2–2.5 hours. There is no regular bus from the station to Carvoeiro — a taxi or pre-arranged pickup is the practical option for the last stretch.
Alternatively, train to Portimão station (~50 min from Faro) and taxi from there to Carvoeiro (~15 min, ~€12).
Check CP (Comboios de Portugal) for the current timetable.
From Lisbon
By bus
Rede Expressos runs daily services from the Sete Rios bus terminal in Lisbon to Portimão (~3.5 hours, €20–22). From Portimão, Lagoa is a short taxi ride or local bus. For Carvoeiro, a taxi takes about 15 minutes.
From Lisbon Airport, take the Metro to Jardim Zoológico (blue line, ~30 min) — Sete Rios terminal is immediately outside.
By train
There is no direct train from Lisbon to Lagoa. Two routes work:
- Lisbon (Oriente or Entrecampos) → Tunes: Intercidades (~3 hours, from €22), then regional train to Estômbar-Lagoa (~20 min, ~€2)
- Lisbon → Faro: Alfa Pendular (~3 hours, from €25), then regional westbound to Estômbar-Lagoa (~45 min, ~€5)
Total journey: 4–5 hours including connections.
By car
Take the A2 south from Lisbon across the Tagus bridge, then the A22 westbound. Exit at junction 6 or 7. About 280 km, 2 hours 45 minutes in light traffic. Both motorways are tolled — budget roughly €20–25 total.
From other Algarve towns
By train
The station serving Lagoa municipality is Estômbar-Lagoa, on the Lagos–Faro regional line. Trains run every 1–2 hours. Note that the station called Silves is technically inside Lagoa municipality but serves Silves town — don't get off there for Carvoeiro or Lagoa.
| From | Journey time | Approx. fare |
|---|---|---|
| Faro | 45 min | €5.00 |
| Portimão | 10 min | €1.80 |
| Albufeira–Ferreiras | 20 min | €2.50 |
| Lagos | 35 min | €3.50 |
| Silves | 5 min | €1.50 |
From Estômbar-Lagoa station, Carvoeiro is 5 km south — too far to walk comfortably. A taxi costs about €10. Portimão station is only one stop west and may have better taxi availability.
By bus
Vamus Algarve runs services connecting Portimão to Carvoeiro and Lagoa, though frequency is limited. Most inter-town bus routes pass through Portimão, making it the main connection hub for this area. Weekend services are especially thin.
By car
| From | Route | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Portimão | N125 east or EN124 | 15 min |
| Silves | N124-1 south | 15 min |
| Albufeira | A22 west, exit J6 | 20 min |
| Faro | A22 west, exit J6/J7 | 40 min |
| Lagos | A22 east or N125 | 30 min |
Getting around Lagoa
Lagoa town
Lagoa town is small and walkable, with shops, restaurants, and the municipal market within a tight centre. It's a working town rather than a tourist hub — most visitors pass through on the way to the coast.
Carvoeiro
Carvoeiro is compact and centred on its small beach cove. The village itself is walkable, though the streets are hilly — the descent to the beach is easy, the climb back up less so. The Algar Seco boardwalk is a 15-minute walk from the centre. Hotels and villas are often spread across the surrounding hillsides, making a car useful for getting in and out.
Cliff beaches
The headline beaches — Benagil, Marinha, Albandeira — are scattered along the coast east of Carvoeiro. Each has its own access road and car park, and there is no bus service between them. A car is essential. In July and August, parking at cliff beaches is very limited — the small lots fill by mid-morning. Arrive early or consider a boat tour from Carvoeiro or Portimão harbour.
Parking
Free parking is available on the outskirts of Carvoeiro and along the road into Lagoa town. Central Carvoeiro has limited spaces and metered parking near the beach (roughly €0.50–1/hour in summer). The cliff beach car parks are free but small.
Taxi
Taxis operate from Carvoeiro centre and can be arranged through hotels. For Estômbar-Lagoa station pickups, book ahead rather than hoping to find one at the rank. Uber and Bolt work in this area but availability outside summer is inconsistent.
