At a glance
From Faro Airport
Most visitors to the eastern Algarve land at Faro Airport, 40 km west of Tavira.
Private transfer or taxi
A pre-booked private transfer is the simplest arrival: door-to-door in about 30 minutes, typically €40–50 for the car. Worth it if you're landing with luggage, after dark, or with children. Taxis from the airport rank run on the meter and cost more — typically €70–80 — because the A22 tolls get added on top.
Uber and Bolt both operate in the Algarve. The same trip usually costs €30–40, though summer surge pricing and Friday evenings push it higher. Both apps work at the airport pick-up area outside arrivals.
Car rental
Rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. Take the A22 (Via do Infante) eastbound and exit at Tavira — 25 minutes on a clear road. The A22 is tolled; most rental companies offer an electronic toll device (ask at the desk or it may already be fitted). The toll for this stretch is around €2.50.
The N125 is the free alternative, running through Olhão and the edges of Faro. Allow 40 minutes and expect traffic near Olhão, especially on summer weekends.
By public transport from the airport
The cheapest route combines bus and train:
- Take the Próximo bus (line 16) from outside the arrivals terminal to Faro bus station or train station (~15 min, ~€2.85)
- At Faro train station, take the regional train eastbound to Tavira (~35 min, ~€3.50)
Total cost: roughly €6–7. Total time: allow 1.5–2 hours including the wait between connections. Trains run every 1–2 hours. The last eastbound train from Faro departs around 9pm — if you land later, a transfer or taxi is the only option.
Check CP (Comboios de Portugal) for the current timetable.
From Lisbon
By bus
The most direct public transport option. Rede Expressos and Renex run daily services from the Sete Rios bus terminal in Lisbon. The journey takes about 4 hours and costs €20–22. Some services run direct to Tavira; others go via Faro with a short stop.
From Lisbon Airport, take the Metro to Jardim Zoológico (blue line, ~30 min) — Sete Rios terminal is immediately outside.
By train
There is no direct train from Lisbon to Tavira. The route requires a change at Faro:
- Lisbon (Oriente or Entrecampos) → Faro: Alfa Pendular (~3 hours, from €25) or Intercidades (~3.5 hours, from €22)
- Faro → Tavira: Regional train (~35 min, ~€3.50)
The connection at Faro is across the same platform, but trains don't always align well — you may wait 30–60 minutes. Total journey: 4–5 hours including the wait. The bus is usually simpler.
By car
Take the A2 south from Lisbon across the Tagus bridge, then the A22 eastbound across the Algarve. Exit at Tavira. About 300 km, 3 hours in light traffic. Both motorways are tolled — budget roughly €20–25 in total. The drive is straightforward; the only congestion is leaving Lisbon and the occasional slowdown around Albufeira in summer.
From other Algarve towns
By train
Tavira sits on the Faro–Vila Real de Santo António regional line, with trains every 1–2 hours in each direction.

| Faro | 35 min | €3.50 |
| Olhão | 15 min | €2.30 |
| Vila Real de Santo António | 25 min | €3.00 |

The Tavira municipality has five stations: Livramento, Luz de Tavira, Tavira, Porta Nova, and Conceição. Tavira station is the one you want — it's a flat 10-minute walk north along the Gilão river into the historic centre. Porta Nova and Conceição serve the eastern villages. Luz de Tavira and Livramento are rural halts with infrequent service.
By bus
Vamus Algarve connects Tavira to Faro (line 67, ~45 min) and Vila Real de Santo António. The bus station on Rua dos Pelames is central — 200m from the Roman bridge. The ticket office opens daily 7:20am–7pm. Local routes also serve Santa Luzia, Pedras d'El Rei (for the Barril beach miniature train), and Cabanas de Tavira. Single fares around €2.20 for local journeys. Services are more frequent on weekdays; weekend schedules thin out.

From Spain
Tavira is well placed for arrivals from across the border. Seville is about 2.5 hours by car via the A49 and the A22 Guadiana bridge. From Ayamonte, the seasonal Guadiana ferry crosses to Vila Real de Santo António in 15 minutes (roughly €5 per car) — from there, Tavira is 25 minutes by car or train.
FlixBus runs a Seville–Faro route that stops in Tavira on some services. Schedules vary by season; check directly as not every departure calls at Tavira.
Getting around Tavira
On foot
The historic centre is flat and compact: everything from the castle to the market fits within a 15-minute walk of the Roman bridge. The cobbled streets are uneven in places, so flat, sturdy shoes help. The walk from the train station into the centre follows the river and takes 10 minutes.
Santa Luzia is 3 km west along a lagoon-side path — 30–40 minutes on foot, flat and scenic. In summer it's a pleasant evening walk; in August heat, take the bus or drive.
Ferries to Ilha de Tavira
Boats to Ilha de Tavira run from two points:
- Quatro Águas (2 km east of the centre): Year-round service, 10-minute crossing, boats every 15–30 min in summer. A Vamus bus connects the centre to Quatro Águas, or walk the waterfront in about 25 minutes.
- Praça da República (town centre): Summer-only service, 20-minute crossing. More convenient but less frequent.
Local buses
Vamus Algarve local routes connect the centre to Santa Luzia, Cabanas de Tavira, and Pedras d'El Rei. Service is limited: roughly 4–6 departures per day on weekdays, fewer on weekends. Timetables are posted at stops and on the Vamus website.
Parking
Paid parking is available along the riverside and near Praça da República (metered, roughly €0.50/hour). Free parking is easier to find near the train station and on the streets south of the Gilão. In summer, arrive before 10am for a central spot. The Quatro Águas car park (for the island ferries) fills early on beach days in July and August — arrive by 9am or take the bus from town.
Cycling
The Ecovia do Litoral cycle path passes through the Tavira area, linking the town to Olhão to the west and Cabanas de Tavira to the east along flat, coastal terrain. Bike hire is available in the centre. The path is shared with pedestrians in places and unpaved in short sections, but offers a good car-free way to reach Santa Luzia and the ferry points.
Taxi and ride-hailing
Local taxis wait at the train station and Praça da República. Uber and Bolt operate in the wider Algarve but availability in Tavira itself is inconsistent — expect waits of 10–15 minutes or no cars at all, especially outside summer. For reliable pickups, a local taxi or pre-booked transfer is safer.
