Who this is for
You have a long weekend (fly in Thursday, fly out Sunday or Monday) and you want to play three strong rounds without spending the trip in a car. The Golden Triangle — Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, and Vale do Lobo — puts a dozen championship courses within 20 minutes of each other, all inside the Loulé municipality.
Base yourself in or near Vilamoura or Almancil. Every course in this itinerary is within 15 minutes of your hotel. The only longer drive is the airport transfer, 25–30 minutes each way.
Best months: March–May and October–November. Spring has the best combination of dry fairways, comfortable temperatures (18–24°C), and lower green fees. Autumn is similar but with warmer sea temperatures if you want a beach afternoon. Summer is playable but hot (30°C+) and green fees peak. Winter works (courses are open year-round) but occasional rain and waterlogged fairways are a risk.
Day 1 (Thursday): Arrive, settle in, Vilamoura
Drive from Faro Airport to Vilamoura: 29 minutes (26km)
Afternoon flight: pick up the car and drive to Vilamoura. If you arrive before 3pm and want to stretch, the Vilamoura marina is a 10-minute walk from most hotels: bars, restaurants, and the kind of people-watching that comes with a 1,000-berth marina.
Evening: eat at the marina or drive 10 minutes to Almancil for restaurants that cater to the golf crowd without the marina markup. See Where to Eat in Loulé.
Where to stay in Vilamoura
Stay in or near Vilamoura and every course in this itinerary is within 15 minutes. The resort hotels often bundle golf packages with discounted green fees — worth checking before booking separately.
Victoria Golf Resort & Spa
Formerly Anantara Vilamoura, this property was sold to Arrow Global Group and rebranded in May 2025 as Victoria Golf Resort & Spa, managed by Accor, with plans to become a Fairmont hotel after renovations are completed. The spa remains a centrepiece, and golf packages through nearby courses are well-organised and competitively priced. The atmosphere is calmer and more considered than the marina hotels, though the location on Vilamoura's outskirts means walking to restaurants requires commitment. The combination of attentive service and golf convenience makes a reasonable case for the price. Note that the property is undergoing major renovation, so check current availability and which facilities are operational before booking.
Best for: golfers wanting spa access between rounds, couples seeking calm over nightlife, those comfortable with renovation disruption

Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas
A large-scale Hilton resort known for its dramatic cascading pools, which function as a water park in all but name. The pool complex alone draws families, and the resort backs it up with a spa, multiple restaurants, and the Hilton consistency that repeat guests rely on. The location is central to Vilamoura's golf and marina attractions without being in the thick of either. Rooms are spacious by Algarve standards, and the public areas feel well-maintained. The trade-off is atmosphere: this is a big hotel running at volume, and peak-season weeks can feel crowded around the pools. At €€€€, pricing reflects the facilities rather than the intimacy.
Best for: families wanting water-park-style pools, those seeking international chain consistency, golf visitors

Crowne Plaza Vilamoura
An IHG resort built around an 18-hole golf course on the outskirts of Vilamoura. The proposition is straightforward: golf access with hotel comfort. The Crowne Plaza formula delivers clean rooms, a pool, a spa, and the reliable consistency that business travellers and repeat visitors expect. The on-site course saves the logistics of driving to play, and packages with other Vilamoura courses are well-organised. The location is quieter than the marina hotels, which suits golfers who want early nights and early tee times. For non-golfers, the resort feels purposeful rather than atmospheric. Competitive pricing for Vilamoura, particularly in packages.
Best for: golfers wanting on-site 18-hole course, business travellers, those wanting reliable chain quality

Day 2 (Friday): First round — Vilamoura Old Course
Drive from Vilamoura to the course: 5 minutes
Tee off at the Vilamoura Old Course, the Algarve's original championship layout, opened in 1969 and redesigned by Martin Hawtree. Mature umbrella pines line every fairway, and the routing through the trees makes it feel more established than the newer coastal courses. Par 73, around 6,200m from the yellows. Book a morning tee time; the light through the pines is the draw.
Afternoon: if you want a second hit, the Laguna Course and Millennium Course are both within 5 minutes. Otherwise, walk the marina, hit the driving range, or spend an hour at Praia de Vilamoura, the beach is a 10-minute walk from the marina.
Day 3 (Saturday): Second round — Quinta do Lago or San Lorenzo
Drive from Vilamoura to Quinta do Lago: 15 minutes (12km)
Two options at the top of the market:
Quinta do Lago South, the flagship course of the resort, regularly ranked among Portugal's best. Lakeside holes, Ria Formosa views, and immaculate conditioning. The South is the prestige pick. The North Course is slightly less famous but equally well-maintained and often quieter.
San Lorenzo, consistently rated the best course in the Algarve. The back nine skirts the Ria Formosa lagoon with water on both sides. Access is limited (hotel guests and members get priority), so book early. Green fees reflect the exclusivity.
Afternoon: if the weather is warm, drive 10 minutes to Praia da Quinta do Lago, a long, quiet beach accessed via a wooden boardwalk over the lagoon. The contrast with the manicured fairways is the point.
Evening: this is the night to eat well. The Almancil–Quinta do Lago area has the highest restaurant concentration in the Algarve. See Where to Eat in Loulé.
Day 4 (Sunday): Third round — Vale do Lobo Royal, then departure
Drive from Vilamoura to Vale do Lobo: 15 minutes (10km) Drive from Vale do Lobo to Faro Airport: 25 minutes (22km)
Book an early tee time at Vale do Lobo Royal. The signature hole — the par-3 16th over the red sandstone cliffs — is one of the most photographed in European golf. The Ocean Course is the alternative if the Royal is booked, with more elevation change and ocean views.
After the round, you're 25 minutes from Faro Airport. If your flight isn't until evening, lunch at the Vale do Lobo clubhouse or drive to Quarteira for a cheaper, more local meal along the beachfront.
Practical notes
- Car hire: A small car is enough; you're driving 10–15 minutes between courses. The A22 toll road isn't needed for this itinerary; everything is on local roads.
- Accommodation: Vilamoura or Almancil, €100–250/night depending on season. The resort hotels (Hilton Vilamoura, Pine Cliffs, Tivoli) often bundle golf packages with discounted green fees. Worth checking before booking separately.
- Green fees: Vary wildly by season and course. Budget €60–100 per round in shoulder season, €100–180 in peak. Twilight rates (after 2–3pm) save 30–40%. Online booking through the courses' own sites is usually cheaper than third-party platforms.
- Booking: Book tee times 2–4 weeks ahead for peak season, especially San Lorenzo and Quinta do Lago South. Shoulder season is more flexible.
- Dress code: Collared shirts required at all courses. No denim. Soft spikes only. Most courses are strict. Bring appropriate shoes.
- Club hire: All courses offer rental sets (€30–60). Quality varies. If you're particular about your equipment, bring your own; airlines generally accept golf bags as sports luggage.
- Budget: €100–250/night accommodation, €60–180/round green fees, €40–70/day food. Total €150–350/day per person depending on course selection and season.
- Flights: Short breaks mean tight connections — if your flight is delayed or cancelled, EU regulations entitle you to up to €600 compensation.
